Hi. I am wondering who is reading this??? If you are, please write me a note in your child's planner saying you are. If I don't get a majority of response, then I will discontinue this blog. I am hoping this is helping to keep everyone in the Social Studies loop.
Today, we did some MT History. We took a look at our state flag and a closer look at our state seal on the flag. We talked and inferred why objects were put on it. When walking around, I could tell that students were taking their time and putting effort into their notebooks. Yay!
Have a great night. I hope to meet some of you at Barnes and Noble night tomorrow. Please come over and say hello. :0)

Hello there.
Today, kids got into groups of two and used the ipads to research a given state in the NE region. They had to solve a crossword puzzle and find out some basic fun facts. At the end of class, we were able to share out what we had learned. I loved hearing, "That was fun."
There is no homework for Wednesday.
We had a talk about MT History and my expectations. We are all perfectly clear on them now. I know I will see improvements. Yay!
Have a great, cold couple of days.

Effort Needed.
Hello there. I hope all of you had a great Thanksgiving break.
This week, we will continue our journey through the NE Region. Kids will get into groups and use the ipads to do some research on their assigned state. Then, we will share those findings out with the rest of the class. In doing so, we will look for things that this region has in common and what makes it so unique from others.
We will also continue on with our MT History studies. I would like to end the basic facts unit, and move into the more "history" units. How did we even become a state? Well, that is a long story! We will take it one time period at a time, starting with how the American Indian's live's changed when Europeans' came over from England. Many, many effects on this culture.
I graded the kids' MT History notebooks over the break. We will be having a serious, serious talk about my expectations when it comes to those. We build these together, me modeling up on the screen where things should go, what to write, and what to do. Kids need to pay attention to those expectations. They are not allowed to just put things on whatever page they want or wherever they want. There is a system to make it flow smoothly. Many, have their notebooks totally out of order. From this point on, they need to do it the right way. Again, we will be talking seriously about this on Monday. Part of their grade on these notebooks are to do it with effort and neatness. 4th grade quality is expected on every single page. Those that don't finish in class, are expected to finish before the next class. They can do it!!!!! I totally BELIEVE in them.
Have a great weekend.

I Am Thankful For You!
Hi there. Hopefully you all had a great weekend. It is a short week this week, so we will only meet once. We will finish up our tour of the NE states. Kids listen to a CD that takes them on a virtual train ride through the states. They stop at different places in the NE and enjoy learning more. We will be stopping at Hershey, Pennsylvania. YUMMY!!! I often have youtubes to show that enhance the learning even more.
Some students need to finish up their Theme Reader worksheet. It is due on Monday. Some kids have already turned it in.
When we return after the Thanksgiving break, we will move onto our next region. Enjoy your time off, and know that I am thankful for you reading this! :0)

What makes our region different from the NE? (Learning Question Today)
Hi there. The states and capital's test went very well for most. Now they know the format and how it goes. The first one is always the hardest. It was pretty obvious though to tell which ones had studied and which had not. Remember, there are games off to the right to help learn the locations of all 50 states.
We will NOT have class this Friday. We will be doing a fun science lab with Mrs. Auch during our SS time. :0)
Today, we added the grizzly bear to our MT History notebook. We will finish that up next week.
We also did some work out of the theme reader today. Kids read this material previously in Mrs. Auch's class in their reading LEAD 21 studies. We did a nice review and then the kids were given a reading guide to complete. I shared with them that the reading guide goes in order as they re-read or skim through the introduction and Ch. 1 material again. The reading guide has both literal questions (found in book) and inferential questions (need their knowledge plus book information). They brought home their theme readers. If not, they can go online and see the text too. Please limit help on this one. Those that have trouble may not have been participating in the discussions and daydreaming. Getting involved in academics is the sure way to understand the text even more!
Assignments are due on MONDAY, November 25, 2013.
Have a great day!

MT History Day!
Hi there. Today we worked in our MT History notebooks. We added the 7 American Indian Reservations found in MT and the 12 tribes that are actively found on them. Eventually, we will find the reasoning behind these when we journey through time. We also added the Bitterroot flower. That is the state flower of Montana. What a pretty one indeed!!!!! It was discovered by Lewis and is named after him (scientific name).
States and Capital's Test is THIS Monday. There will be no surprises. The kids know exactly what is on the test and the format. Study, study, study. :0)
Have a great weekend!
